ABOUT BLOODY TIME!

First the vote, now this. How will the women of Kuwait cope! In the space of a month they have been “granted” the right to vote and run for public office, and now two women have been appointed by the Government to the country’s municipal council. A week ago, in Kuwait’s last male-only vote, 16 men were elected to the council. Now their numbers are amplified by the two women. According to a report in the Australian today, around 200,000 women are expected to register to vote and already five women have said they will contest the next elections in February. It’s better late than never, and Kuwait is one of the few Arab states that even have elections, so this small step is to be welcomed.
