The new nation-wide history curriculum proposed by the Howard Government contains more references to women than might have been expected and does recommend what it calls a “gendered approach” to history but it is disappointing, in my view, for failing to include more women’s milestones.
There is nothing about women “firsts” – e.g. first women MPs, first women Cabinet Ministers, first woman on the High Court, first woman to head the ACTU, first women state Premiers, first woman to run a major corporation etc etc.
Nor are any of the social reforms that benefitted women mentioned in the stipulated milestones.
No mention of women police, the widow’s pension, child endowment.
I am sure there are many other important achievements that could have been included.
Read the curriculum and see what you think. Make a comment.
