On a brief trip to Manhattan Island last month a normal enough looking woman asked me for a donut at a Dunkin Donuts stall when she saw I'd bought two. I was only too happy to give her one and reduce my cholestoral intake accordingly. But still, it was unexpected. The week that I was there the white collar criminal Bernie Madoff was sentenced to 150 years for swindling tens of thousands of Americans out of their savings. A fair few New Yorkers were happy to come forward and testify how tough it is for them now - middle class people who now would scrounge for food in dumpsters. Of course, not all of the poor in New York City were Bernie Madoff victims but it all seemed a sign of increasingly tough times over there in the Big Apple. How right you are, Anne.
