Anne, re the lost picture – have you researched the Victorian Artists’ Society records, particularly information on their exhibitions? You may find the title of the portrait. Also my cousin may have some information about an exhibition or book on Victorian women artists. Contact me for my cousin’s details.
My connection to this is that my Great Aunt Florence Heywood lived opposite St Joan of Arc. I grew up there and my mother told me tales of Auntie Floe’s artist visitors and parties.
    Hope this is helpful.

It is amazing who listens to Macca. I was amazed to be invitd on but very pleased to be there, given his audience. Great to hear from you. Hope life has improved for you since we last spoke

  • Dear Catherine
thanks for getting in touch, and I would love to hear from you about your cousin. I have searched the VAS catalogues in the State Library of Victoria. I know the painting, which I believe is called A Saint, was exhibited in October 1933 (along with the other portrait which I now have) and I know it was purchased by Mrs William Mortill (Lydia). It hung at Tay Creggan for at least some years and disappeared in either 1939 or 1969 (see my book for the arguments about why I think this). I would love to hear any stories you remember about artists from your great aunt.
    best wishes
    Anne

  • Thankyou Anne for your wonderful book The Lost Mother which I have just read. I hope that you are able to solve many more of the mysteries in relation to the paintings of your Mother over the ensuing years. You must have made many readers besides me realize that we all need to know more about the art world and I have plans to head to the Queensland Art Gallery to take in some frames (including the Constance Stokes!)
